  1. 'Paranormal Activity 3' continues the much-anticipated supernatural-horror series.

The film is set in 1988, 18 years before the events of Paranormal Activity and Paranormal Activity 2, when Katie and Kristi were children.

While trying to get video evidence of Bloody Mary, Katie and Kristi are first confronted by the monstrous demon that sets to haunt them.

  2. The third film of the Paranormal Activity series is coming to theaters soon. Check out the poster, trailer and 3 scary clips from the movie.

The third film takes place in 1988, when Katie and Kristi were kids. While trying to get video proof of Bloody Mary, Katie and Kristi are first confronted by the monstrous demon haunting them in the first and second movies along with their family. Although shown to be a prequel in the trailer, it is unconfirmed if it will be a parallel sequel like the previous film again.

Directed by Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost and distributed by Paramount Pictures, “Paranormal Activity 3″ opens in theaters on October 21, 2011.

Watch the trailer and clips from “Paranormal Activity 3″ here:

  3. After releasing three preview clips earlier this week, a new trailer for the upcoming sequel Paranormal Activity 3 has arrived online to help answer the riddle of what those mysterious clips were about.

The first Paranormal Activity followed Katie (Katie Featherston) and her boyfriend Micah (Micah Sloat) as they attempt to catch the spirit haunting their Southern California home on video, while Paranormal Activity 2 saw that spirit transfer to Katie's sister, Kristi (Sprague Grayden), and her brother-in-law, Dan (Brian Boland). Not to spoil anything, but both movies ignore a "feel-good" ending.

The third installment documents the childhood of both sisters, as their father, much like Micah in the original, places cameras all over the house in an attempt to record the mysterious source of noises and bumps.

  4. Katie along with her boyfriend Micah moves into a house which is two-storied. The house is in the suburban area of San Diego. Katie has been a feeling since her childhood that a ghostly appearance has always followed her. She now feels that this ghostly presence follows her into her new house also. Micah does help her by recording the activities within the room during the night by using a video camera. They could record some footprints and some sounds. Dr. Fredrichs who is a psychic suggests her to visit Dr. Johann Avery who is an expert of demons as according to him demon is haunting Katie.

  5. October is nearly upon us and that means the annual onslaught of Halloween horror movies – a lineup which, in recent years, has come to include the Paranormal Activity franchise.

Halloween 2011 will bring us the third chapter in the series, the sparsely-titled Paranormal Activity 3. A full-length trailer and some viral clips have been generating curiosity about what secrets and scares this third entry – which is actually a prequel – will provide; there’s also the lingering question of whether or not this franchise still has the necessary steam to make a third film in a tried-and-true formula a worthwhile trip to the theater.

The annual genre movie festival “Fantastic Fest” recently finished off with a surprise screening of Paranormal Activity 3, and some of our favorite movie sites were on hand to catch the screening and have posted their reviews of the film online.

So, if you’re interested in reading some early Paranormal Activity 3 reviews, we’ve posted some review snippets below - Totally SPOILER-FREE for anybody worried about having the movie ruined before they have a chance to see it. Feel free to read on at your leisure:

  6. HitFix - It is effective, no doubt about it. Joost and Schulman were the filmmakers behind “Catfish,” and this film manages to play its tone fairly realistic. I like their use of ambient sound, and I think they stage many of the scares very well…The film makes a few big moves early on, and then as it progresses, it definitely keeps turning up the intensity and the reality. I have some logic issues about why certain things are being filmed and who’s doing the filming, issues that are somewhat inherent to the idea of a found footage movie, and I have some other questions that have to do with continuity between the movies. But overall, it feels to me like this is exactly the sort of escalation that has to happen for audiences to walk away happy after this one.

The last ten or fifteen minutes of the film is where they really let it all swing, and it’s a lot of fun to watch how they stage it and how they play it and what the reality of the film is. Some of the jumps are predictable, but they throw so much at the audience that it feels like they just plain want to please. If this was the last of the “Paranormal Activity” films, it would feel like they’d pretty much wrapped it all up.

  7. If you liked the first two Paranormal Activity films, you will most certainly like Paranormal Activity 3…If you haven’t seen any of the previous PA films, you’re not going to be too confused if you make PA3 your franchise entry point, though you will miss out on the context of it all, which isn’t much of a deal breaker considering the PA franchise is already about stretching your willingness to buy into all the spooky nonsense.

The thing that impressed most about PA2 was its ability to expand the demon mythos introduced in the first film without feeling like it was a stretch to connect the two, and it’s exactly what impresses most about PA3. Returning screenwriter Christopher B. Landon does a commendable job of further defining the unique relationship these two girls have with the unseen thing that goes bump in the night, though unfortunately most of that comes in the film’s last hurrah.

  8. Paranormal Activity 3” is less effective than its predecessors, but it still works when and how it needs to. As a prequel to a prequel that further explored the supernatural world created by Oren Peli, the film unwittingly reveals the dwindling supply of ideas left to be injected into the franchise, both in conception and execution, even as it offers a finale mostly worthy of its predecessors.

We won’t spoil any of the film’s surprises, but we will say that the two theatrical trailers released thus far feature a wealth of material that is not actually in the film, suggesting that if it hasn’t already significantly changed, it still might be. But what’s currently in the film generates real, entertaining scares, even if they’re not necessarily best for fulfilling the back story previously established for the girls. This one most actively tested our resistance to character stupidity while still really terrifying us, and further, created payoffs that worked while making the least sense conceptually.

  9. Paranormal Activity 3 was shown as the last Fantastic Fest midnight secret screening. It was presented by co-directors Henry Joost, Ariel Schulman, and star Katie Featherstone as an unfinished film. The audience was told the sound was not finished. However, judging by the trailer for the film released earlier in the week and how little footage in that trailer was actually seen in the version of the film we saw last night, one can't help but wonder if more work is to be done before its October 21st release. Either scenes will be put back in for paying audiences to see or Paramount purposefully released a trailer showing as little of the real film as possible. Regardless, I for one will certainly be seeing the film opening weekend to see what, if anything, has changed.

Those behind the Paranormal Activity franchise made a wise decision going into the second film. Instead of pushing the story forward and following a now-possessed character, instead of supplanting the structure of strange noises and people getting pulled down hallways to a completely new set of characters, they decided to go back. Granted, Paranormal Activity 2 didn't work, but it's not because it was a prequel nor was it because it decided to expand on the mythology behind Katie, Kristi, and the demon who has haunted them since childhood. Paranormal Activity 2 didn't work, because it was more of the same, still shot on a room, try to see what's happening somewhere in the background, move on, maybe get the occasional boo-got-ya door swinging open or shut. It had the overall story served, but the structure, after only two films, felt tired.

Thankfully the people behind Paranormal Activity 3 realized this, knew what worked and continued with it and realized what didn't and fixed it. What we end up with is a film that creates as well as expands on interesting characters, builds an overall backbone of narrative for fans of the series to discuss after leaving the theater, and rivals the first in terms of scares. Paranormal Activity 3 will have you jostled in your seat, and that's for most of the film's running time, all the way until the final 10-15 minutes when your eyes are locked on the screen, the tension and atmosphere grows heavy in your chest, and the darkened theater you sit in doesn't quite feel safe any more.

For this third outing, we go even further back in time, this time to 1988 when Katie and Kristi are young girls living with their mother and her new boyfriend. The boyfriend likens himself an amateur filmmaker, even shooting wedding videos for a living. So when Kristi begins talking to her imaginary friend, Toby, and things begin to grow weird around the house, he sets up cameras to try and capture evidence of something a little more than normal occurring.

  10. The technical aspects of it all are where the suspension of disbelief has to come into play if you're going to enjoy Paranormal Activity 3. Not only the way the boyfriends' cameras work or how long he would have to actually sit to watch all of the tapes - this is brought up but discarded with little explanation - but the same tropes that always befall found footage movies. It isn't too far into the film where you're yelling at the characters on screen to "drop the damn camera", but they never do. It's come to the point where you don't even need an explanation for it any more. It just has to be accepted for the sake of a fun, scary film.

Which is precisely what Paranormal Activity 3 is. It isn't trying too hard for believability. If it were a beached submarine it wouldn't be more on the surface. But what it is, what it tries to do, it succeeds far greater than the second film, maybe as good as the first. Joost and Schulman - the directors of Catfish - have a way with composition, the way their cameras pick up reflection and depth in the rooms of this house. The corners of the home provide plenty of places for someone or something to be hiding, and none of that is a happy accident. Instead, every inch of this house is used to either scare the audience with what is seen or build the tension with what might be lurking just off camera.

An added element this time around is a camera the boyfriend has rigged to an oscillating fan that moves its view from the living room to the kitchen. Just that slow movement from one room to another is enough to make your eyes divert to the edge of the screen, just waiting for what might be in frame at any second.

Effective yet surface-level scares wouldn't even work without some kind of story, and the mythology for these two girls and what is happening to them is expanded upon in new and incredibly interesting ways. It's a benefit and a hindrance that this is the direction the franchise has taken. Oren Peli's original film was simplistic. A woman is haunted by a demon. She doesn't know why. There's no way to stop it. It was terrifying in its simplicity, the idea that this woman was chosen for no reason whatsoever and there's nothing she can do about it. But at this point, with the idea looming that the series builds on the mythology rather than progress the story, all notions of simple have been pulled into the darkness. That truly is a hindrance if what we're given isn't effective, but the mythology building in Paranormal Activity 3 has become as interesting as trying to sort out how certain scares were even pulled off.

They've probably hit the best stride with the third outing, a clear indicator there are far more Paranormal Activity entries to go and an absolutely haunting supernatural movie to boot. The demon may be on its way to jumping over the salt line, but with Paranormal Activity 3, the franchise is just getting started.

  11. I love all of these. To me,the found footage, low budget style resonates in a more profound way than the tired, predictable big budget torture porn BS that I have grown sick of. Every time I attend a screening, the audience is screaming up til the very end.

  12. I actually enjoyed the second one. It wasn't perfect or as great as the first but I was still on the edge of my seat and jumped more than a couple times. From the sounds of it part 2 will be the perfect bridge for the third. Love the reverse arc of this franchise and the new and inventive ways that they seem to be taking both mythology AND the technical logistics of the "found footage" genre. Can't wait :)

  13. I disagree that Paranormal 2 didnt work. I really dug that is was a prequel too,and I thought how they handled the reasons for the video taping were even better and more believable than the first movie.
I expected there to be similarities in the hauntings. What keeps the movie grounded is that our ghost/demon has a consistant behavior pattern. Showing signs our protagonists
can relate to, since apparently theyve been dealing with them since they were children. Paranormal 2 got me more into the story now I cant wait to see the 3rd.

  14. It took them three movies to tell one kind of lame story. The first one was a novel idea , I thought. The second one was terrible. This is what sucks about the whole genre of horror. This weird compulsion to franchise everything.
